Elizabeth Iro, Chief Nursing Officer at WHO, visits the INMO.

On the 27th Feb 2020, Ms Elizabeth Iro took time out from her busy schedule to visit the INMO Headquarters in Dublin.

During her visit, she addressed many important issues surrounding Nursing & Midwifery, alongside key elements of the 2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife“ with the INMO’s President Martina Harkin-Kelly, General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha,  Deputy General Secretary David Hughes, Director of Professional & Regulatory Services Dr Edward Mathews and Head of Education & Professional Development, Steve Pitman, whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the Richmond Education & Events Centre.

Ms. Iro’s distinguished career involves more than 30 years of experience in public health in the Cook Islands and regionally. As Secretary of Health of the Cook Islands, she implemented health reforms to strengthen the country’s health system.

These include developing the country’s National Health Roadmap 2017-2036, the National Health Strategic Plan 2017-2021, and the Health Clinical Workforce Plan. She had previously served as the country’s Chief Nursing Officer and Acting Director of Hospital Health Services. For the first 25 years of her career, she was a staff nurse, midwife and charge midwife at hospitals in the Cook Islands and New Zealand.

Year of the Nurse and Midwife (IYNM)

Calendar of Events:

-The International Year of the Nurse and Midwife (IYNM) was launched by the Minister of Health on the 23 January 2013.   

-The Nightingale Challenge has been accepted and will be led in Ireland by the Office of the CNO and ONMSD.

-The 39th Annual International Nursing & Midwifery Research and Education Conference, RCSI Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery will take place on 27 February 2020. Theme  ‘The WHO Year of the Nurse and Midwife: Celebrating Nurses and Midwives Contribution to Healthcare Locally and Globally'.

-The INMO Annual Delegates Conference 2020 will include the Nursing Now and IYNM as a key theme (6-9 May).

-Nursing and Midwifery Conference celebrating the IYNM will take place on the 25th May 2020 organised by the ONMSD, CNO and NMBI.

-NCCP Celebrating Cancer Nursing, 12 June in Farmleigh.

-The ICM Conference Bali takes place 21st - 25th June 2020.

-The ICN NP Conference Nova Scotia takes place 30th Aug - 2nd Sept 2020.

-A regional nursing and midwifery conference will take place in HSE South on 9 September 2020 celebrating nursing and midwifery. The event is organised by the HSE South NMPDU, CHO 4 and 5, Waterford IT and Tralee IT.

-The All Ireland Midwifery Conference organised by the INMO and RCN NI will be themed in support of the IYNM.

-The Irish Association of Directors of Nursing and Midwifery conference in October 2020 will be the medas the IYNM·  

-The All-Ireland CNOs’ Conference will be themed as the IYNM (December, Dublin).

-A campaign to raise awareness of nursing and midwifery is both primary and secondary schools are currently being finalised and lead by the ONMSD HSE.
